Key Facts

  • The southernmost point of the Indian subcontinent.
  • The Kanya Kumari Temple is dedicated to the goddess Kanya Kumari, a form of Parvati.
  • Situated at the confluence of three seas; sunrise and sunset can be seen from the same spot.
  • Sangharakshita and Satyapriya planned their great walking pilgrimage to begin from here and proceed north to the Himalayas.

At the very tip of the Indian subcontinent, where three seas meet, Sangharakshita and Satyapriya — newly renounced wandering ascetics — set the starting point of their great pilgrimage northward through India toward the Himalaya. In the ancient Indian tradition, Kanya Kumari to the Himalayas is the span of the whole sacred land.
