Key Facts
- ◆ Converted from a derelict Bethnal Green fire station by Order members who lived and meditated on site during the building work (c.1976–1979).
- ◆ Officially opened in January 1979; Sangharakshita was overseas for the opening but returned to give major lecture series there.
- ◆ The wrought-iron Nalanda crest above the main gates was made by Order member Aryadaka (Phil Miller), a trained metalworker.
- ◆ Sangharakshita kept a private flat in the upper floors (Sukhavati), his London home for over a decade.
“Whether it was to visit a newly-established Buddhist centre or community … he would quietly leave either Padmaloka or the London Buddhist Centre, his main residences at that time.”
