Key Facts

  • Located in the Mission District ('named after the original Catholic Franciscan mission').
  • Men's community on one floor, women's community on another; ground floor being converted to main centre space.
  • Sangharakshita gave a talk on the Nature of Reality attended by a hundred people during his 1994 visit.
  • He also visited the Hartley Street Zen Center (Castro district) and met poet Philip Whalen.

“The FWBO in San Francisco had a new centre which included a men’s community on one floor and a women’s community on another floor. It is a very spacious place … The centre is situated in what is called the Mission district, the mission being the original Catholic mission of the Franciscan fathers. The area did rather remind me of Notting Hill.”
