The Hermitage sits at a bend of the road near Ninth Mile, a few hundred yards below the junction. The bungalow had been built some twenty years earlier by an Englishman and stood vacant when a local acquaintance suggested it to Sangharakshita. Its owners, pleased to have him as a resident, renamed it The Hermitage in his honour.

The property included a small summerhouse in the garden where Sangharakshita regularly meditated. Pilgrims visiting today can see this summerhouse still standing, along with the main bungalow with its characteristic wooden eave carvings and the carved mask mounted above the entrance.
