Key Facts

  • The Buddhist Society was founded by Christmas Humphreys and was then located in Great Russell Street near the British Museum.
  • Sangharakshita attended meetings here and encountered practising Buddhists for the first time.
  • This was his only organised Buddhist connection in England before the army and India.
  • The Society later moved to its well-known premises at 58 Eccleston Square, SW1.

As a teenager who had discovered Buddhism alone through books in South London, Sangharakshita made his way to the Buddhist Society at Great Russell Street near the British Museum — his first encounter with an actual community of Buddhist practitioners, and a first glimpse of organised Buddhism in England before he left for India with the Army.
